Gold was discovered in the Appalachian Mountains, within the Cherokee Nations boundaries, which resulted in thousands of people looking to find gold entering the Cherokee territory in an event called the "Great Intrusion".⁵ In the beginning of the gold rush Congress permitted the creation of the Dahlonega Mint. The areas residents took this as federal seal of approval and much of the Cherokee land was given to Georgian citizens through a lottery system.
